I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.
Here’s the promise from the Old Testament for God’s people. The coming of the Holy Spirit means God’s people are holy and different – from the inside out. When Jesus came, one of the biggest and most astonishing changes was that after his death and resurrection he poured out the Holy Spirit. With this, Jesus was bringing a radical change. 3 Jesus changed everything by pouring out the Holy Spiritįulfilling the Old Testament was big, really big. He claimed to be the true man of God fulfilling the nation of Israel. He claimed to be the temple of God making the physical temple redundant.
He claimed to be the lamb of God, fulfilling the Old Testament lamb. And so, through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God. Jesus said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. Luke 24:44-48įor no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. When Jesus came, he made it clear that he fulfilled the Old Testament. The promise and fulfilment centre on Jesus. It can be summarised in two parts as promise in the Old Testament and fulfilment in the New Testament. 2 The Bible has one huge awesome plotline However, God’s plan was always to allow people to wear poly cotton socks. They taught what it meant to be set apart and special for God. These laws taught God’s people that holiness meant difference and distinction. I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God therefore be holy, because I am holy.
Every time a Jew put on clothing, cooked a meal, went shopping at the market, sowed a field or thought about sex they were reminded by these cascading laws that they were God’s people, set aside for him. The food, clothing, sexual, ethical, financial, slavery and many other laws were given to show this distinction. The Israelities were God’s people and were to be set apart and special for God – holy. These laws on food, clothing, sexual, ethical, financial dealings etc from Leviticus and elsewhere were given to the Jews, God’s people, to make them distinct from the nations around them and to teach the Israelities (the Jews) that they were God’s people. The point of the Leviticus laws and Old Testament laws So, what is going on?ģ points come together 1. Christians break the clothing laws! And, what’s worse the food laws, inheritance laws and lots of others.
